The 6 Pillars of a Powerful Personal Brand

Hey friend,
In this email, I'll share the 6 most important elements to grow and scale your personal brand on LinkedIn.
This is a no-brainer in 2022.
Whether you're self-employed, running a company, or employed.
Here's why it matters for everyone:
- Freelancer or digital creator: Attract more customers and collaborations with other professionals.
- Founder: Find customers, get press, raise funds, hire better employees, build partnerships.
- Employee: Increase your worth to your current employer and level-up in the job market.
- Executive: Make your company shine and find your next C-suite job.
In short, it's the most powerful digital asset you can build.
Unfortunately, so many people skim over it.
Because it's hard to build a personal brand...
Or they think that...
- A personal brand is merely your follower count.
- A personal brand isn't only for influencers and celebrities.
- A personal brand isn't set in stone - you're able to pivot along the way.
- A personal branding is about selling yourself and manipulating others.
All false.
And, lucky for you:
Understanding the different elements of a personal brand clears 95% of the confusion.
After that, it's a matter of piercing the pieces together and putting in the reps.
Are you ready?
Here's how to build a rock-solid personal brand on LinkedIn, step by step:
Step 1: What do you want to be known for?
A personal brand online allows you to choose the person you want to be.
We start with the end goal in mind:
Ask yourself the question: “if someone was recommending me to someone, what would I want them to say”.
The beauty here is that you can work towards that answer.
Want to be an email marketing expert?
Start positioning yourself that way.
An example is my friend Jacob Suckow:
Got a knack for branding or digital marketing?
Use that angle.
The most important thing here is that you stay consistent.
A brand image is built over time.
Not by switching every other week.
Onto the next.
Step 2: What’s the problem you want to solve?
This one really ties in with the first element.
What's a problem that keeps you up at night?
Or, gets you out of bed in the morning.
It can be something you overcame yourself.
For example, with The Creator Academy, I build the resources I wish I had earlier in my journey.
That's why I document how to validate a product idea, build an online course and how to optimize your LinkedIn Profile.
With this, I solve the problem of helping creators grow and monetize their audience.
What about you?
Step 3: Who do you want to serve?
In this step, you want to pick the ideal group of people you want to serve.
Most creators forget to target a specific audience when they start out.
This makes them very broad and unappealing.
Don't worry, your target audience doesn't need to be perfect from the start.
You might think that picking a niche audience will mean reducing the number of clients, visitors, or followers you could get.
And you’d be right.
But, to start you have to pick a group of people with similar characteristics.
Is it small-business owners, solopreneurs or founders?
Choose.
Seth Godin said it best:
"Everyone is not your customer."
Trust me, the more content you create, the more you engage with your audience, and the better you understand your ideal audience.
And, as a result, you're able to hone in on your target audience.
Your audience wants to know what drives you.
In other words, what personal objectives is your brand supposed to bring you closer to?
Is it financial freedom, is it a thriving business with happy employees or is it retiring your parents?
An example is Sean Anthony, one of my favorite creators to learn from. His goal comes down to running solopreneurship and generating income from his different activities on the internet - listing $1M as the revenue target.
Step 5: What’s your message for the world?
Here you want to be more externally focused.
What's the general message you want to share with your brand?
Your content gives a great opportunity to give something back to your audience.
Is it to motivate your audience, inspire them to take action, teach them something or simply entertain them?
An excellent example is my good friend Niharika, who - no surprise - blew up massively in the last 12 months.
Her writing is transparent: no holding back or sugar coating and she keeps it real by sharing the ups AND downs.
In doing so, she inspires so many of her audience to start writing online as well.
As that's what got her to this level of success.
Step 6: What kind of person are you?
Are you funny? Adventurous? Polite? Logical? Emotional?
All these elements will help you craft a way of communicating which will attract people who genuinely like your personality.
Meet Jasmin.
He's generous, extremely knowledgeable, funny (don't tell him), and always in for a laugh.
In a short period of time, he became one of my favorite creators, I'd say friend even, on LinkedIn.
He shows up with unwavering enthusiasm, and valuable comments and is able to spark conversations with anyone.
His content is spot on, but his commenting game is perhaps even better.
It's no accident that his comments under other creators' posts often turn into full-blown conversations, involving many people.
TL;DR
Build a powerful personal brand by asking yourself the following 6 questions:
- What do I want to be known for?
- What’s the problem I want to solve?
- Who do I want to serve?
- What goals do I want to reach?
- What’s my message to the world?
- What kind of person am I?
That's it for this week.
Hope this was valuable.
Wishing you the best weekend ahead.
